Academic Philosophy

Ethel Walker envisioned a school whose purpose was to provide young women with an education which would prepare them for college and a life marked by "freedom of expression and action." The school has enrolled exceptional young women from around the world for a century now. Stated quite simply, academic excellence is the standard at Walker's. Reflecting the diverse population of the United States and our global interdependency, Walker’s seeks and serves students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic background. This diversity enriches our classes and community as a whole in a multitude of ways.

Academic Preparation

At Walker’s we are dedicated to helping young women maximize their potential, encouraging them to form and express their own opinions, ideas and talents. Achievement increases in the classroom, where girls are able to develop their natural talents, find their unique voices and emerge as strong, confident young women. Our program offers a balance of stimulating academics, encouragement and expectation. Reading, writing, research, analytical and critical thinking, intuitive problem-solving, collaboration, and the interconnectedness of learning are a vital part of our curriculum, and students have the opportunity to choose from a broad array of courses in theatre, dance, music, and the visual arts.

Walker’s offers each student a wide variety of academic experiences and challenges. With guidance from their advisors and the Dean, students prepare an academic plan that will ensure a creative, interesting and appropriate program, choosing from various courses across a number of disciplines to ultimately meet, and usually exceed, graduation requirements.

All of Walker's students go on to attend four-year colleges, and the majority are accepted to their first choice of school. Recent graduates are attending schools such as Dartmouth, The University of Pennsylvania, Bates, Hamilton, and UConn. Walker's has a personalized College Counseling program, where all students are guided through the application process by a full time college counselor.
