Curriculum
Over 100 different courses are offered at Walker's, including 19 AP and 22 Honors courses. In addition, all 9th grade and all 10th grade students take seminar style courses designed to expose them to real world issues and important life and academic skills. All 10th graders also take Women's Health and Culture, and each girl must fulfill the School's Ethics course requirement before she graduates. Also, all students must complete a Junior/Senior Project designed by the students and overseen by a faculty advisor. There are other opportunities for girls to challenge themselves academically, through Teaching Assistantships and Independent Study.
Walker's Faculty
The faculty at Walker’s genuinely care about their students and are passionate about what they teach. Many are veteran teachers who are masterful in the classroom and provide stability and continuity to our program of studies. Others are talented young teachers with fresh eyes and new perspectives. However, all understand how to engage students in meaningful learning through creative and interdisciplinary approaches that are engaging and effective. Our teachers provide students with opportunities and a supportive setting in which to take healthy risks and undertake challenges which expand their confidence and self-knowledge. The faculty/student radio at Walker’s is 1:6, the average Upper School class size is 10 students, and over 60% of Walker’s teachers have advanced degrees.
Advisor Program
Walker's advisor program is a key element of our students' experience. From the start of a student's time at Walker's, she is assigned an advisor who remains in that spot throughout her time here. Students have weekly lunch with their advisor group (6-8 students) and their advisor. They can also meet privately with their advisor at any time, and often participate in fun activities such as dinners and outings. Advisors keep close watch on their group's academic and social experience here, and work directly with their teachers to help with advanced placement and college recommendations, curriculum choices, extra-curricular options and more. All Walker's faculty members, and many administrators, are advisors.
Community Service
