Theatre

The Theatre Department at Walker's strives for quality productions. Our primary goal, however, is to emphasize the process and its relationship to the development of talent in each individual student. Our theatre activities are designed for creative, highly motivated students who have an interest in performing and/or technical theatre.

Productions

  • Winter Play (Open to grades 9–12): During the winter months, cast members rehearse a play which is presented to the community in mid-February. Auditions are held in November. Past productions have included Us & Them, The Odd Couple (female version), Out of Our Father's House, Twelve Angry Jurors, Rememberin' Stuff and Salem's Daughter.

  • Middle School Production: Upper School students gain experience with choreography, technical support and other behind-the-scenes roles as the Middle School students rehearse a production to be presented to the community in early March. There is an independent study option for qualified seniors to student direct the MS play alongside the faculty director. Recent productions include: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Secret Garden, The Jungle Book, and The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree.

  • Spring Musical (Open to grades 9–12): The Theatre, Music and Dance Departments collaborate on a full-scale musical in the spring. Cast members are selected by audition in January. Rehearsals begin in March, with performances at the end of May. Recent productions include Once on this Island, The Sound of Music, AnnieGrease, Little Shop of Horrors, and Seussical!

In the winter and spring, students may be exempted from their athletic requirement through participation as performers in the Winter Play and/or Spring Musical. Such students must still complete the annual team sport requirement.

Curriculum

The Arts are a vital aspect of Walker's curriculum and many activities are awarded academic credit. All students are required to take at least 1.5 credits in the visual or performing arts.
