Community Service

Georgia Habitat for Humanity At Walker's we understand the obligation and joy of the relationships between education, leadership and service. All students perform a minimum of ten hours of school sponsored community service each year. The Head of Community Service, a member of the Big Seven, works closely with the Director of Service Learning to organize community service opportunities for students throughout the year.

Projects have included Walk-a-thons, helping with Connecticut Public Television and Radio auctions, performing dances and plays at area nursing homes, making valentines for children’s hospitals, and monitoring and maintaining a section of the nearby Farmington River as part of the local "Adopt a Stream" project. The Homeless Project is an ongoing effort to raise consciousness about the needs of the homeless.

Through our community service program, Walker's girls learn the importance of giving to others and gain a lot in return. At a school where there is much abundance, giving back to our community at large is an important and necessary value.

Walker's Service Learning Mission Statement

Service learning at the Ethel Walker School extends beyond the classroom in ways that enhance the curriculum and foster commitment to social justice and civic engagement. Through planning, education, service, and reflection, students apply the knowledge and skills gained in their classes to real world problems. Students work closely with community partners to make a positive impact on the local and global community.

Organic Garden Organic Garden

Walker's organic garden has become a focus for Middle School community service. Tending to the garden and ensuring it is as well kept is a student responsibility. Additionally, a portion of the produce from the garden is donated to various food banks and charities.
