Ethel Walker School
Horizons at The Ethel Walker School hosted its annual STEAM Exposition this past Thursday, July 27 at the School’s Centennial Center. Students from the Walker’s program and others such as Westminster and Grace Academy gathered in the gymnasium to participate in this summer’s projects. The day featured a Disney themed exposition with quotations lining the walls from female lead characters stating remarks of independence, self-starter mentality, and ingenuity. As Students pre-K through 8th grade made their way around the room they were able to interact with STEM robotics and littleBits Coding Kits with Spheros products, LEGO and Lincoln Logs castles, handmade boat and rocket ship crafts. They were also able to utilize chemistry principles when making DIY glitter tubes, cookie baking, and interacting with live animals from the Children’s Museum in West Hartford.
The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program is specifically designed to increase access to robotics, coding, and engineering design through play. The program fosters collaboration, teamwork, and problem solving skills among the Horizons students. This helps to ensure that the students know that they are what a person in STEAM looks like and their ideas have the power to change the future.
Horizons at The Ethel Walker School is the nation’s first all-girls Horizons program, catering to under-served students in pre-K through 8th grade who attend Hartford public schools. Horizons creates the conditions, connections, and community that enable every girl who attends to gain the skills, confidence, and motivation to overcome the opportunity gap and realize her potential. The Program provides a six-week, full-day educational enrichment summer session for Hartford public school students with a range of academic abilities. It blends exceptional academics with cultural enrichment, social-emotional learning, and swimming instruction, and reflects the culture, values, and educational standards of The Ethel Walker School.
The STEAM Expo is the only of its kind offered in the Farmington Valley Area and was designed to showcase the exceptional projects of the Horizons student community.
