Reports To: Assistant Head for Faculty and Academic Affairs and Department Chair

The Ethel Walker School is seeking a full-time Director of Theatrical Arts to start in August 2025. This role comes at an exciting time, as recent philanthropic gifts of over $4.5 million will fund major renovations to Ferguson Theatre, a 350-seat performing arts center built in 1969. The Director of Theatrical Arts will work closely with the design team to help shape the renovation of the space. Upgrades will include modern sound, lighting, rigging, HVAC, seating, and lobby improvements, creating a state-of-the-art facility to support Walker’s rich tradition in theater, music, and dance.

The ideal candidate will inspire young artists in grades six through 12 to take creative risks, build confidence in their voices and ideas, and grow as creative and outgoing performers. A deep belief in the power of storytelling to foster empathy, resilience, and self-expression is essential.

Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to cultivating a growth mindset in the rehearsal room and classroom, nurturing each student’s artistic journey while fostering a safe, inclusive, and joyful environment. A willingness to embrace culturally sustaining and responsive pedagogies is important, as is the ability to lead with empathy and create a culture of belonging.

This role is ideal for someone who delights in the energy of a boarding school community and who is eager to participate fully in its vibrant, collaborative life, on stage and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches up to 3 courses.
  • Serves as advisor to 6-8 students.
  • Participates in residential life.
  • Produces, directs, and manages three performances each year.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in theater or a related field (an advanced degree is preferred).
  • Has a minimum of 5 years of experience teaching  and/or directing adolescents.

  • Possesses a strong work ethic and sense of humor.
