History and Social Science Teacher

Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Reports To: Dean of Faculty & Department Chair

The Ethel Walker School has an opening for a full-time History and Social Science Teacher beginning in August 2023. The successful candidate will have the ability to center students in teaching the breadth of the Middle and Upper School history and social science curriculum, including Middle School Humanities. Candidates must be comfortable or willing to learn how to integrate new technology and culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy into the classroom.

Requirements

  • Ability to teach the breadth of the Middle and High School history curriculum, including non-Western and women’s histories.
  • Willingness to incorporate Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) principles and Project Based Learning (PBL) into the curriculum.
  • Ability to create and sustain a culture of belonging in a relational classroom environment.
  • A strong sense of community engagement and collegiality.
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues on lesson planning and innovative curriculum development.
  • Strong ability to clearly communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain active communication with our diverse students, colleagues, and families.

Responsibilities

A highly developed sense of collaboration and a willingness to work with colleagues is required for this position. This person will work closely with colleagues to make sure the School’s mission and values are being met and will have autonomy in planning lessons and developing units and assessments with the support of the Department Chair. The successful candidate will show an empathy for and a willingness to work with adolescent girls at this phase in their development, and support the full community of a boarding school in the following ways:

  • Serve as an advisor (academic and otherwise) to students.
  • Attend required community events including but not limited to evening banquets, concerts, performances and community dinners.
  • Performing regular duties in our residential program.
  • Participate in assigned weekend team duties.
  • Coach or assist with two seasons of a co-curricular activity; experience coaching lacrosse, volleyball, squash, or softball is preferred.
  • Obtain a Public Passenger Endorsement for your CT driver’s license to drive students to off-campus activities and/or athletic events.
  • Exhibit a high degree of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Participate in personal and professional development.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.
