Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Reports To: Dean of Faculty and Department Chair
Start Date: August 2024

The Ethel Walker School has an opening for a full-time Latin teacher beginning in August 2024. The preferred candidate will have at least three years’ teaching experience, an advanced degree in the discipline or education, and the ability to teach the breadth of Middle and Upper School students. Preferred candidates will have experience teaching within a Comprehensible Input (CI) framework. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to creating a culturally responsive classroom and fostering a growth mindset, while guiding students in becoming creative, patient, and collaborative problem solvers.  


A highly developed sense of collaboration and a willingness to work with colleagues are required for this position. The successful candidate will show an empathy for and a willingness to work with adolescent girls at this phase in their development and bring a commitment to creating a student-centered and culturally responsive classroom. Walker’s is a boarding school and, in addition to teaching Latin, other responsibilities could include dormitory residence or association and participation in the afternoon program at the school in a manner commensurate with the candidate’s skills. 

Teaching Requirements

  • B.A. in Latin/Classics or a related field, advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience teaching Latin at the middle and/or high school level.
  • Experience teaching Latin through Comprehensible Input.
  • Ability to teach introductory Spanish and/or French desirable.
  • Commitment to creating a culturally responsive classroom environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Facility with the use of technology (preferable Apple) in learning techniques.
  • Strong work ethic (timely adherence to deadlines and ability to self-motivate).
  • Attendance and participation in faculty and department meetings.
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues on lesson planning and curriculum development.
  • Commitment to meeting departmental deadlines and goals.

Community Requirements

  • Serve as an academic advisor to students.
  • Participate in assigned weekend team duties.
  • Coach two seasons of a co-curricular.
  • Obtain a Public Passenger Endorsement for your driver’s license to drive students to off-campus activities and/or athletic events.
  • Attend required community events including but not limited to evening banquets, concerts, and community dinners.
  • Exhibit a high degree of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Participate in personal and professional development.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.
