School Counselor and Wellness Educator

Status: Full Time, Exempt, Academic Year
Reports To: Director of Counseling and Wellness

The Ethel Walker School announces a search for a full-time Counselor and Wellness Educator to begin in August of 2023. The successful candidate will be eager to both provide guidance, support, empowerment, and wellness education to a residential academic girls+ community and to learning; they will be student-centered, wellness and solution-focused. Candidates must be well versed in current mental health trends and willing to be proactive in the education of the community. They must have flexibility, adaptability, and the motivation to work both independently and as a member of a team. Respect for confidentiality and diversity is crucial, as is possessing strong cross-cultural competency skills. Experience running groups, workshops, and teaching are an integral aspect of the position.

A current CT license in Counseling or a related field (LPC, LMFT, LCSW) and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in counseling adolescents are required.

Responsibilities

The Counselor will be working within the entire school community with a strong focus given to Middle School student needs. The Counselor will form strong relationships with both students and teachers, which will allow for collaboration when creating academic and/or social-emotional plans for individual students.

  • Provide direct clinical work, including crisis, short term, and ongoing individual counseling utilizing evidence-based and trauma-informed therapeutic interventions.
  • Maintain active working relationships with students’ outside providers.
  • Maintain clinical documentation within the laws and regulations of your licensing body and the state of Connecticut Department of Public Health.
  • Provide counseling or workshops around relevant topics (but not limited to):
    • Developing social and emotional skills
    • Forming and maintaining healthy relationships
    • Cultivating empathy and compassion
    • Conflict resolution and peer mediation
    • Identity based support and empowerment
    • Fostering resilience
  • Work closely with the Director of Academic Support to collaborate to create and implement academic and/or social-emotional plans for individual students.
  • Serve as a member of the Wellness Team, working collaboratively to identify students that are in need of additional support.
  • Work closely with teachers and other staff to determine student needs, offer guidance and interventions, assist with communication, and advocate for the students.
  • Create educational materials, including weekly wellness newsletters for the community.

Teaching Requirements

Partnering with the Director of Counseling and Wellness to build and implement a wellness curriculum including the following:

  • Student seminars.
  • Faculty professional development.
  • Community workshops.

Community Requirements

  • On call evenings and weekends with the Director.
  • Attend required community events including, but not limited to, evening banquets, concerts, and community dinners.
  • Obtain a Public Passenger Endorsement for your driver’s license to drive students if necessary for off-campus mental health appointments.
  • Exhibit a high degree of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Participate in personal and professional development.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.
