STEAM Specialist, Pre-K-3rd Grade

Salary: Compensation based on experience

The mission of Horizons at The Ethel Walker School

Horizons at The Ethel Walker School is the nation’s first all-girls Horizons program and serves low-income students
who attend Hartford public schools. Horizons creates the conditions, connections, and community that enable every girl who attends to gain the skills, confidence, and motivation to overcome the opportunity gap and realize her potential.

Position Summary

This is a six-week assignment position that corresponds with our weekly program themes. Candidate should be able to help create and nurture a lifelong love of knowledge in children. Horizons seeks a professional, caring individual who can help implement strategies to engage students in active learning through non-traditional ways. We expect the candidate to work as a team player to help fulfill the Horizons mission.

responsibilities

  • Work closely with the 4th-8th Grade STEAM Specialist to build and create lesson plans and content.
  • Aid in the classroom duties of teaching and caring for approximately 145 students (15 in each class) during a six-week summer academic enrichment program.
  • Responsible for planning the daily classroom schedule and leading instruction.
  • Work in partnership with approximately two to three volunteers in the classroom each day.
  • Attend swim instruction lessons with students providing encouragement.
  • Required to attend STEAM-related field trips, participate in daily meals with the students, attend Family Night and staff meetings, as well as all other duties that their supervisor may require.
  • Work with community partners to build in extracurricular activities such as LEGO (annual steam exhibition) and Children’s Museum (on-site field trips).

requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Must have a genuine interest in teaching science.
  • Experience in writing and designing curriculum.
  • Ability to demonstrate a growth mindset, optimism, and belief that all students can learn.
  • Self-starter with the ability to innovate and think creatively about education.
  • Ability to inspire students and encourage creative thinking.

Program Dates

Staff Orientation: Dates TBA; attendance is required.
Program in Session: Monday, June 26-Friday, August 4, 2023 (six-week program)
