Status: Full-Time, Seasonal
Reports To: Executive Director of Horizons at The Ethel Walker School
Salary: $7,000 (total sum of salary; paid bi-weekly during duration of employment)

Horizons at The Ethel Walker School is the nation’s first all-girls Horizons program and serves low-income students
who attend Hartford public schools. Horizons creates the conditions, connections, and community that enable every girl who attends to gain the skills, confidence, and motivation to overcome the opportunity gap and realize her potential.

Position Summary

Horizons at The Ethel Walker School seeks a qualified, talented, dynamic and enthusiastic Reading Specialist to serve during the 2023 six-week summer program. The Reading Specialist will support teachers and students in meeting the individual needs of students in the area of reading throughout the six weeks. He/she will have further responsibility of understanding and assisting in implementing current methodologies, effective instructional strategies, and collecting and organizing student data.

responsibilities

  • Work closely with classroom teachers by providing them with additional strategies for those students who have been identified for additional instruction.
  • Experience supporting teachers and students in improving reading achievement.
  • Implement and monitor a plan for additional/supplemental reading support.
  • Provide small group (pull-out) reading instruction and push-in reading intervention.
  • Model, co-plan, co-deliver reading instruction.
  • Work with the classroom teacher to monitor student progress.

requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field and a reading specialist certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience.
  • Experience administering reading skills assessments and intervention.
  • A strong passion for girls’ education.

Program Dates

Staff Orientation: Dates TBA; attendance is required.
Program in Session: Monday, June 26-Friday, August 4, 2023 (six-week program)
