“Hi! I’m Maya, and I’m a sophomore boarding student at Walker’s. I entered the School in the middle of 8th grade, and wanted to become a Cicerone because of how unique my transition was. It was very important to me that all prospective students and families got to know the school as well as possible, and that they had the chance to fall in love with Walker’s like I did. I’d like to show families our amazing, tight-knit community, and the constant displays of sisterhood that I see daily.”

What is your favorite class, and why?

History! I love history because I like information, and I like learning new ways to process and present the information that I’ve learned. For me, it’s the perfect combination of logic-based work, reading and writing.

What is a unique experience you’ve had at Walker’s that you didn’t think you’d be involved in when arriving at Walker’s?

I’ve been writing poetry for years, but it wasn’t until I joined Poetry Club that I felt comfortable presenting my poems! In addition to that, my friends from Poetry Club encouraged me to start a poetry book, and I’ve been working on that for the past couple of months.

How do you feel you have grown since your first day at Walker’s?

I’ve grown beyond all of my original expectations. Now that I’ve adapted to the rigorous academics (and learned how to study), I’ve become an all-around better student, learner, and test-taker. I’ve learned how to open myself up emotionally to new friendships and relationships. And, I’ve learned how to open up my mind to new ideas and values that students and experiences have presented to me.
