A Dial and graduate of the Class of 1963, Susan Ford is recognized for excellence as a multi-sport athlete and a lifelong leader in women’s athletics. At Walker’s, she played varsity field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse, earning a reputation as a skilled and versatile competitor.
Susan earned her B.A. in Philosophy at Connecticut College for Women (now Connecticut College), where she was elected Head of the Athletic Association and helped create competitive opportunities on campus in the absence of formal intercollegiate teams. She later completed an M.A. in teaching at Brown University while teaching at the Dana Hall School. Susan went on to coach at Concord Academy and then Wellesley College, where she led the field hockey and lacrosse teams. Within five years, Wellesley’s field hockey team ranked among the top ten Division III programs in New England, and Susan was named New England Women’s 8 Conference Coach of the Year twice — once for field hockey in 1988, and again for lacrosse in 1990. She has coached at every level, served as an active umpire for more than 30 years, and was honored with the Distinguished National Service Award as a Lead Clinician for women’s game officials.
A passionate advocate for women’s athletics, Susan served as President of the United States Women’s Lacrosse Association, hosting the first U-19 World Lacrosse Championship in 1995 and championing players’ safety and traditions. She has received six Hall of Fame inductions, including the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2007. Walker’s is proud to make number seven.
