Learn about the power of African drumming in this fun and energetic physically-distanced workshop led by Walker’s director of music. Girls ages 10-14 will explore a variety of rhythms and develop an appreciation for the intricate musical sounds, and variety of moods the drums can convey and express. Face coverings are required.
African Drumming is an essential part of Walker’s Music Program. The group utilizes a variety of drums, some of which were constructed from trees on the School property in Simsbury. The group often performs on campus and continues to create a moving presence at Walker’s.

About the Instructor
Laurie MacAlpine came to Walker’s in 1998 and has expanded the music program to address the needs of a growing student body. She earned her bachelor’s degree in science with a minor in vocal music from Ladycliff College and went on to receive her master’s in music composition from The Hartt School, University of Hartford. At Walker’s, she has expanded the music program to include a gospel choir and a chamber choir (Voce Felice), Upper and Middle School orchestra, a handbell choir, and chamber ensembles. In October 2006, she was awarded The Natalie Galbraith Mitchell Chair in the Humanities for her work at the school.
