Game Summary

We took the long scenic ride to play coach Sam Hargrove’s Saints at their home field. A sunny and warm Fall day was the backdrop as we looked to get up early and place ourselves in the driver’s seat for the match. Lizzy Strapp 21′ was elusive in the midfield as she looked to take players on and create chances for us in the offensive third. Midway through the first half she was taken down in the box, but no call was awarded. Ten minutes later we were rewarded when Ellery Finn got free on the left flank and played the ball into Canterbury’s box where it hit a Canterbury player’s arm for a penalty kick. Veronica Garcia 18′ cooly placed the ball past Canterbury’s goalkeeper Peyton DeRouen 21′ to put us up 1-0. We were able to settle down from there and play the ball from side to side looking for our openings in the Canterbury defensive lines. Liz Roach 18′, Alaina Vermilya 19′, and Elise Namnoum 19′ worked to hold the ball for our midfield and create chances, but Canterbury’s back four never gave up and kept thwarting our last pass. Coming out of halftime up 1-0 we continued to play our passing game and spread the field out in order to create passing lanes. We were rewarded at the 20 minute mark when Veronica Garcia 19′ got free on the right side and drove a low cross into a sprinting Liz Roach 18′ who volleyed home the goal to put us up 2-0. Hargrove’s team did not give up and the tide shifted late in the game as they pressed and pressed and pressed with the ever speedy Ella Olcese 21′ and hard working Rachael DeLong C 19′. We weathered the storm and saw it through for a final 2-0 result. Next match at home vs. Gunnery, hope to see you there!
