vs. Christian Heritage School
September 8, 2018 @ 10:00 am
We knew kicking the season off against coach John Egan’s Christian Heritage squad would be no easy feat. Despite the cool damp weather, the conditions were perfect given we were playing on a beautiful new turf field. The match kicked off with us working to hold our defensive shape and make penetrating our midfield and defensive half as difficult as possible for CHS. Despite our first game nerves, we were able to finally start to settle down twenty minutes into the match, and start to find CHS’s weak side. Amanda Gould 19′, Ava Strohmeyer 21′, and Lizzy Strapp 21′ worked tirelessly to combine on offense and then get compact on defense. CHS played a counter attacking style that put us on our heels more than once when sister combination Alex Angelini 22′ ands Mia Angelini 20′ combined with the ever dangerous Ranita Muriel 19′. Consistent threat stoppers Maise and Caroline Smith 19′ banded together to avert the CHS counter. Just after the midway mark of the first half Elise Namnoum 19′ hit driving corner kick from the left side that skidded in front of the goal box. A faulty clearance saw the ball fall between Claudia Luciani 21′ and Alaina Vermilya 20′ who then quickly pushed the ball left and hit a perfect strike that gave CHS’ goalkeeper Niah Perreta 21′ no chance.
A constant back and forth was the run of play up until the end of the first half. Coming into the second half Reagan Kerecz 20′ had to come up strong when a driven cross from 35 yards out forced her to come off her line quickly and pick up a fast skipping ball in traffic. Our ability to support each other in filling the open spaces to create passing options improved as the second half wore on, however our first touch failed us too many times, which in turn gave CHS opportunities to put our back four under pressure. CHS’ Perretta 20′ made an incredible save when she came off her line midway through the half and pulled off an amazing one vs. one reaction save to thwart Alaina Vermilya 20′. Ultimately we held on to defend against CHS’ counters and preserve a 1-0 win on the road. Next up…. MacDuffie this Wed.
