Game Summary

We knew we would be in for a match with the Dragons. The day turned hot very quickly, and the pace of play was back and forth from the start. We started the game with good composure, going side to side looking to find the weak spots in The Dragons’ defense. The GFA back four anchored by Lilah McCormick 19′ stepped up quickly and dove into every tackle setting setting us back on our heels defensively. Maise Smith 19′, Caroline Smith 19′, Gabby Garcia 19′, Anneliese Sonju 21′, and Julia Luciani 20′ worked tirelessly to repel attacks created by The Dragons’ midfield combo of Sophie Staeger 19′ and Ella Murphy 19′. We played an errant ball on the left side of our defensive third at the twenty minute mark and were punished for it. GFA took the ball to the goal line and hit a driving service across the goal that found the foot of a GFA attacker who got goal side on our defender giving them the 1-0 lead. We struggled to find the feet of Caludia Luciani 21′ and Alaina Vermilya 20′ but continued to work hard to find a rhythm. Reagan Kerecz 20′ was forced to come off her line more than she would have liked to cut off crosses in the box and dangerous through balls. As the heat peaked we ended the half at 0-1. Still very much in the game despite our struggles we resolved to stick harder into our tackles, push ourselves physically to get into the open spaces on attack, and play to feet. We came out a better team in the second half. While there were moments of frustration our combination play on the flanks with Lizzie Strapp 21′, Elise Namnoum 19′ was much improved. The Dragons’ Shealeigh Crombie 22′ scrapped hard in the midfield and consistently pressured Amanda Gould 19′ and Eva Strohmeyer 21′. Reagan Kerecz 20′ gave her body for the team and came up with a crunching save with 20 minutes left to keep us in the game. We found resolve in her bravery, from there we quickly crowded the midfield with an extra attacker to push for the equalizer. We were rewarded for our efforts twice with less than ten minutes to play with two excellent chances on goal that we were not able to convert. Still pressing up to the last 17 seconds we were stung by a wonderful piece of soccer on the left side of our goal area when a GFA attacker turned in a flash and hit a perfect shot over Reagan Kerecz’s 20′. A bitter defeat that we have to learn from as we move onto MacDuffie this Tuesday. See you then!
