Game Summary

For the first time since 2008 we played in the NEPSAC class C quarterfinals, a proud achievement for us as individual players, and as a team. As the #5 seed, we traveled to play coach Dan Weintraub’s 2016 defending class C champions Kimball Union Academy in Meridan, NH. Play kicked off with us playing the ball into the #4 seed’s defensive third where they were able to relieve pressure and put us on the defensive for the first five minutes of the game. KUA’s strong and organized back four led by captain Sam Chase 18′ were able to repel our passes into the feet of Elise Namnoum 19′, Liz Roach 18′, and Ellery Finn 18′. Our midfield of V Garcia 18′, Kaitlyn Suller 22′, Alaina Vermilya 20′, Lizzy Strapp 21′, and Bones Dunn 20′ worked tirelessly to put passing combinations together but we struggled to find feet on our passes. That combined with KUA’s tough D in the mid third led by captain Maisie O’Shea 18′ held us from mounting any sustained attack. A rare error along the back line 20 minutes in was all Taylor Soule 18′ needed to go through and slot home a 1v1 goal on Reagan Kerecz 20′. But it was Kerecz 20′ who came back not five minutes later when a penalty was awarded to KUA. Guessing correctly again for the third time this season Kerecz 20′ dove to her right and parried the ball away, amazing! Maise and Caroline Smith 19’s, Ava Strohmeyer 21′, Anneliese Sonju 21′, Gabby Garcia 19′, and Nora Griffiths 21′ all combined to hold the back line through until halftime where we ended at 0-1. Very much still in the match despite our struggles to play our possession game we came out in the second half and saw an immediate improvement in our build up and possession from the mid third to the offensive third. The tide slowly turned in KUA’s favor as their physicality emerged and by the 60th minute we were caught on a faulty clearance and it Taylor Soule 18′ again to bang home a goal and put KUA up 2-0. Backs against the wall we went to three backs to bolster our midfield and get our attack revved up but ultimately we could not find our way. Taylor Soule bagged her third goal late in the game when she won a loose ball just beyond midfield and raced past our three backs to go 1v1 vs. Reagan where she placed it in the net. Down 3-0, the whistle blew at 80 minutes to stop our season. The gratitude this team has for its parents’, friends’, and school’s support this past Fall is beyond words. We love you all and thank you. See you next Fall!
