SUMMARY:Parent Education Series: Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Support
DESCRIPTION:The next session of our year-long speaker series titled Understanding the Whole Child: A Walker’s Parent Education Series will be devoted to Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Support. Research shows that parent involvement is a key component of effective prevention. Children whose parents talk to them about alcohol and other drugs are less likely to use them. Parents can play a unique and positive role in keeping young people drug-free during adolescence and in supporting their school’s prevention efforts. During this session\, the Prevention Solutions facilitator will: \n\n\n\n\nHelp parents understand the essential role they play in keeping their kids drug-free during childhood and adolescence.\n\n\n\nHelp parents understand the importance of modeling healthy\, appropriate attitudes and behaviors for kids.\n\n\n\nProvide parents with the latest facts about addiction and the mental and physical effects of alcohol and other drugs and clear up misinformation.\n\n\n\nExplain the risk factors for addiction.\n\n\n\nDispel myths and misconceptions about adolescent drug use.\n\n\n\nAnswer common questions such as:\n\nWhat are the warning signs that my child may be abusing alcohol or other drugs?\n\n\n\nWhat do I say about my own experiences with alcohol and other drugs when my child asks me?\n\n\n\nWhat are some ways to teach my child to resist the pressure to drink or use drugs?\n\n\n\nWhat should I do about the drinking and driving issue?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nregister
