Third-Fifth Grade Reading Specialist

Horizons at The Ethel Walker School is looking for mature, dedicated and experienced individuals for the reading specialist position. Candidates should be able to help create and nurture a lifelong love of knowledge in children. Horizons seeks a professional, caring individual with the ability to help implement strategies to engage students in active learning through non-traditional ways. Candidate must work as a team player to help fulfill the Horizons mission.

General Description

  • Coordinate and oversee pre- and post-program assessment of students using mClass DIBELS Next
  • Identify, via pre-program assessment, readers who need additional support in order to stay on track
  • When necessary, prepare reports on individual students to be shared with the public school staff
  • Assist with staff training, by sharing test data that should be helpful to staff members, individually and/or during staff meetings or during professional planning days
  • Emphasize the importance of good oral language models in all students, and daily practice in developing higher levels of oral language in all classrooms, including art, music, and sciences
  • Follow up with staff to interpret data as curriculum is designed for students
  • Offer guidance to faculty to help develop or strengthen reading instruction curriculum and differentiated student skilled groups for small instruction
  • Train volunteers and interns as needed to work with students as reading tutors
  • Provide tutoring as needed to help students develop language and reading skills
  • Meet with the executive director as needed accomplish goals and/or problem solve as issues occur


  • Five or more years working as a reading specialist or elementary school teacher
  • Experience administering reading skills assessments and intervention
  • A strong passion for girls' education


  • Thursday, June 27 & Friday, June 28: Teacher orientation and classroom set-up
  • Monday, July 1 - Friday, August 9: Six-week program
