We are pleased to share with you additional information about these two recent enhancements to Middle School co-curricular and after school programs which offer a wide array of co-curricular activities within the regular academic day. These two new developments provide students the chance to participate in a variety of activities while also allowing them to play Middle School sports during the academic day, participate in the Middle School play, or earn a place on a JV or varsity team.
Programs are offered by season — fall, winter and spring. Based on the student’s interests, families will select a co-curricular choice for G Block on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each season and an after-school program. Each selection has been designed to be completed at the end of each season, so students can choose the same activity for fall and spring even if they do not choose it in the winter and so on.
Below please find specific information for both the G block options and the after school program options. On the forms linked below, families should indicate their choices by season for both G Block and the after school program. Please visit these forms Tuesday, August 25 to indicate your choices by season.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss your individual selections and your questions. Please reach out to us and we’d be happy to talk with you further.
Students who will not be playing JV or varsity sports will be enrolled in a new class, Skill Development, that offers a variety of activities during G Block on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoon as part of their academic day schedule.
During the Skill Development class, varsity level coaches and dance instructors will guide students as they experience different co-curriculars in order to develop good habits for a healthy lifestyle through the joy of participation while learning new skills. In addition to the winter dance unit, dance class will continue to take place once a week within their academic schedule. Beginner (Level I and II) Middle School riders will be scheduled for lessons during G Block. Please see the “After School” section below for information for intermediate or upper level riders.
With approval from the athletic department and respective coaches, Middle School athletes and dancers can try out for JV and varsity programs. A student selected for a JV or varsity level team for either sports or dance will have study hall during G Block. This way, she can get a jump start on the evening’s homework and also allow her body to rest before she undertakes a full practice with her team after the academic day.
Middle School students are welcome to be on campus after school if they sign up for after-school activities or participate in an after-school team sport. This year we have expanded the after-school offerings to include orchestra, debate, robotics, or study hall.
Students who are selected for JV or varsity level athletics or dance teams will meet with their program after school, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Intermediate and advanced riders will take lessons after school at a frequency that corresponds with their lesson package. Ground School will continue to be held on Wednesday afternoons.
Participation in all after-school activities requires students to arrive by 3:45 p.m. at their designated location for attendance and to remain with the activity until 5:30 p.m. (or prior if a parent arrives for pick up). Boarding Middle School students who do not participate in after-school co-curriculars, must sign up for an after school program. Middle School day students are welcome to have dinner in Abra’s at 5:30 p.m. and must be picked up by 6:00 p.m. On Wednesday afternoons, the after-school program will be offered virtually and is optional for students.
