Walker’s cross country program emphasizes the importance of both individual progress and team spirit. As each girl works to improve her own speed and endurance, she learns the power of training and the importance of racing as a member of the team. Self-discipline, drive, positivity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to one’s teammates are core values of our program.
Walker’s Cross Country program is a member school of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). Walker’s is a Division 3 competitor, and also competes in the prestigious Founders League. League competitors include Choate, Taft, Hotchkiss, Loomis, Westminster, Kent, Kingswood Oxford, and Miss Porter’s.

In just her second season running for Walker’s varsity cross country team, Madi Knapp ’21 made her mark in the school’s program history. Her top 15 finish in the varsity race at the 2019 Founders League Championship earned her All-League Honors for the second season in a row.

Sarah Edson has been coaching cross country at Walker’s since 2014. Having raced distances from 5Ks to marathons over two decades, Coach Edson brings her passion for and experience with running to Walker’s cross country program. She is committed to helping each girl achieve her personal best while advancing the team’s potential and performance. Members of Walker’s cross country discover that competitive running fosters empowerment, endurance, and resilience, traits that will serve each girl well over the course of her lifetime.
Walker’s cross country team again met great success this season, with measurable success at the championship races at the culmination of the fall. The team finished their season with commendable achievements and improvements. On November 2nd, at the Founder’s League Championships at Avon Old Farms, Walker’s had a top 7 finisher, placing 7th out of 63 runners among a very competitive field. In addition to the All-Star finisher, each member of Walker’s team shaved minutes off of their time from their first meet of the season in September 14th.
Following the Founders League Championship, eight of the ten team members achieved a personal best at the New England Championships at Litchfield Memorial Conservation Center held a week later on November 9. As a team, Walker’s placed 12th among 20 teams and earned a Top 7 finisher, with co-captain Madi Knapp ’21 crossing in 5th place among 148 runners with a time of 19:59.
The team looks forward to building off of the momentum created this season for further advancement next fall under Head Coach Sarah Edson.
