Game Summary
On Wednesday afternoon, The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team traveled to Ashburnham, MA to take on Cushing Academy in a matchup of NEPSAC Class B opponents. Walker’s came away with a narrow 2-1 victory with a goal in each half. On the day, the visitors outshot the Penguins 25-5 and forced Cushing’s goalie into 12 saves, but could not put the game out of reach. The hosts hit the crossbar in the final moments in a last-ditch effort to level the score. Walker’s now has a 7-1 record on the season.
In the opening half, Walker’s started strong and scored in the opening minutes when Stella-Rose Lecompte ’27 broke free on the left side of the penalty box and hit a pass to Jani Weber ’26 who slotted it home for an early lead. For Weber, it was her sixth goal of the season in six games. About 15 minutes later, Cushing evened the scoreline when two different tackles bounced in their favor and their center midfielder ripped a shot for 30 yards out just under the crossbar. The score remained 1-1 into halftime as Walker’s host shot their hosts 14-2 in the opening 40 minutes. Cushing’s goalie made seven first-half saves including an incredible tip on a shot from Esther Asamoah ’28 that was going in the top corner.
In the second half, the Wildcats continued to dominate possession and created most of the chances and they finally took the lead with just under 22 minutes remaining. Ayden Riendeau ’26 played a through ball to Lecompte who smashed a left-footed shot off the post. Jazmine Restituyo ’27 was first to the rebound and put it in the net for the game-winning goal. For Restituyo, it was the first goal of her Walker’s career. Lecompte recorded her second assist of the game and now has two goals and two assists in six games played for Walker’s.
Walker’s will play their next game on Wednesday, October 8th when they host Choate Rosemary Hall in a Founder’s League clash. Choate won last year’s matchup 7-0. Wednesday’s kick-off is scheduled for 3:30.
