Game Summary

The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team traveled to Westport, CT on Saturday afternoon for their first away game of the season at Greens Farms Academy. Walker’s opened the game on the front foot as Ayden Riendeau ’26 recorded the first shot of the game forcing a save from the home team’s goalie. GFA responded quickly, though, and scored twice in the opening five minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. In the 20th minute, Sophie Martinelli ’25 scored the Wildcats’ first goal of the season to cut the lead in half. Martha O’Donnell ’23 put a throw-in into the box, and Riendeau was first to it as she laid it off to Martinelli, who scored with her left foot from 20 yards out. The Dragons responded again and scored less than a minute later and took a 3-1 lead into halftime. In the opening half, Greens Farms recorded 11 shots and were awarded four corners, while Jenna Hamel ’25 recorded four saves in the net for Walker’s.
As the second half got underway, it was clear that Walker’s was determined to stay in the contest, and less than two minutes after the kick-off, Lucie Martinelli ’27 scored to make the score 3-1. Allison Hayes ’25, received a pass near the sideline and beat her defender before finding Riendeau in the middle of the park. Riendeau flicked the ball into the path of Martinelli, who ripped a one-time shot into the top left corner for her first score of the season. The score remained 3-2 for nearly 20 minutes, but GFA once again scored twice in the span of a minute to put the game out of reach. They added a sixth in the 74th minute. Hamel finished the day with 12 saves in the net for the away side.
Walker’s will return to action on Saturday, September 24, when they host Kent. The kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m. in Simsbury.
