Game Summary

Despite a drenching rain early in the day we were able to kick off later in the afternoon vs KO. The match turned into a back and forth contest and KO quickly looked to put our backs Julia Luciani 20′, Gabby Garcia 19′, Anneliese Sonju 21′, captain Maise Smith 19′, and Caroline Smith 19′ under threat by playing dangerous through balls on the wet pitch. Several scrambles and clearances ensued by both backs fours as the half wore on. Our midfield never stopped working, captain Elise Namnoum19′ was all over the field tirelessly digging for loose balls and creating havoc for KO’s midfielders. Lizzy Strapp 21′ worked to get wide and take through balls from Ava Strohmeyer 21′ and Amanda Gould 19′. The KO defensive line was strong and worked hard to push Alaina Vermilya 19′, Claudia Luciani 21′, and Nora Griffiths 21′ back whenever possible. As the half wore on we were able to start chipping away at their goal but KO co-captain Charlotte Cyr 19′ was all over her goal area and quickly picked off what we sent at her. Nora Griffiths 21′ had a near miss, but it was not to be and we closed the half at 0-0. The game took on a frantic tone as both teams looked to play direct and bypass midfield defensive lines once they got close to midfield. Lizzy Strapp 21′ was up and down the left side looking to connect with our forward line or cross dangerous driven balls in Cyr’s box. As the afternoon turned into evening the playing conditions became a bit difficult, as the water soaked surface became difficult to navigate. A goal mouth scramble with 25 minutes left rewarded Alaina Vermilya 20′ as she was able to squeeze in her goal to the left netting. Nora Griffiths 21′ continued to be a threat as she kept on combining with Lizzy Strapp 21′ on the left side. It came down to the wire as KO kept repelling our efforts on goal and with ten seconds left they had a corner that our defensive four were able to clear out to preserve the road win. We are at Suffield on Monday.
