Game Summary

On Wednesday afternoon, Walker’s varsity soccer team hosted Berkshire in a WWNEPSSA contest. The teams played to a stalemate for the first 38 minutes before the visitors took their first lead. After Walker’s tied the game just after halftime, Berkshire responded with three late goals to come away with a 4-1 victory.
Jenna Hamel ’25 continued her strong season in the net for the home side as she recorded five saves on the day, including two before halftime. Berkshire’s opening goal came on a corner kick less than two minutes before the break. The cross slipped through the center of the box and made its way to the back post. One of the Bears midfielders was first to it, and her shot went into the upper near corner to give the visitors the advantage.
Sophie Martinelli ’25 scored her third goal of the season two minutes into the second half. Kayla Whalen ’25 won a tackle in the defensive half of the field before she found Lucie Martinelli ’27. She then played a quick pass to Lauren Krupnikoff ’23, who found Ayden Riendeau ’26. Riendeau slotted a pass into the path of Sophie Martinelli, who beat the goalkeeper with a strong left-footed strike. On the play, Riendeau recorded her fourth assist of the young season.
Just six minutes later, Berkshire took a lead they would not relinquish as they scored in the 48th minute and then doubled their lead in the 51st to go ahead 3-1. In the 61st minute, the visitors put the game out of reach as they scored on a breakaway to come away with a 4-1 win.
On the season, Walker’s now has a 2-2 record, and they will head into a tough stretch next week. On Monday, October 3, the Wildcats will travel to Suffield for their first of nine games in 20 days. Suffield was NEPSAC Class B Champions in 2021. The game is set to kick off at 4:45 p.m.
