Game Summary

In a very tough matchup on Saturday afternoon, The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team earned a 4-0 victory over Wilbraham & Monson at home. It was a WWNEPSSA and NEPSAC Class B contest, and Walker’s scored twice in each half to earn their second shutout victory of the season.

In the opening half, Walker’s opened the scoring seven minutes in when they played four good passes on the counter-attack and Julia Coviello ’29 found the bottom left corner for the eventual game-winner. Raphaëlle Dufour ’28 started the play with a good defensive header. Esther Asamoah ’28 was first to the loose ball and played it forward to Sawyar Fleming ’28. Fleming switched the field to Coviello who ripped the shot with her second touch.

Asamoah would score the next two goals – one on each side of halftime. With just over eight and a half minutes remaining before the break, she found Jazmine Restituyo ’27 on the left side. The combined and Restituyo’s cross was parried into Asamoah’s path by the Titans’s goalie for her eighth of the season. 23 minutes after halftime, she was once again first to a loose ball after another counter-attack. Natalia Assis ’30 won a header in the defensive penalty box. Melia Belden ’27 turned quickly and found Fleming on the left flank. Fleming broke down the left side of the field and combined with Asamoah who delayed her initial attack to slip Fleming into the box. She hit a one-time shot with her left foot and then Asamoah finished at the back post after the initial save from Wilbraham & Monson’s goalie.

11 minutes later, with about six minutes left in the game, Amelia Hamel ’28 scored her first of the season. After a long free kick was won by the Titans, Hamel pounced on the ball. She took a couple of touches and found a little bit of space near the top of the box with her right foot. She ripped it and it hit the crossbar and went over the line to finish the scoring on the day.

For Emma Mazur ’17, in the goal for Walker’s, this was her second shutout of the season. She made two crucial saves in the contest and came off her line outside of the box on a number of occasions to thwart the opposition’s attack. Caroline Hayes ’27, Maddie Marsele ’29, Lily Devine ’27 and Molly Norton ’30 continued their strong work in the backline for Walker’s to preserve the shutout as well.

The Wildcats will travel to Wallingford on Wednesday to take on Choate Rosemary Hall in a Founder’s League contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30.
