On Wednesday afternoon, The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team hosted Williston Northampton in a battle between the top two teams in the WWNEPSSA’s Class B. Walker’s jumped out to an early lead and then doubled their lead before halftime. In the second half, the hosts made it 3-0 before Williston came back with two of their own to make it a tense final 15 minutes. Walker’s held on to win 3-2 and take over first place in the standings with one game remaining on both team’s schedules.
The Wildcats were also celebrating senior day, and in a fitting moment, Ayden Riendeau ’26 scored her 17th career goal to put Walker’s ahead 1-0 in the third minute of the contest. Stella-Rose Lecompte ’27 got to the endline on the right flank and Riendeau was first to the cross as she slotted the ball into the left corner. Both teams created chances throughout the rest of the first half, but it was not until there were 30 seconds left before halftime when Walker’s doubled the lead. Jazmine Restituyo ’27 won a tackle near the top of the box and pciked a pass to Nona Gibert Francisco ’28. Francisco took two touched and ripped a shot into the top right corner to make it 2-0 heading into the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, Maya Atwood ’26 and Jani Weber ’26 combined for the third goal for Walker’s. Weber received a pass in the penalty box and was fouled. Atwood stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick. Williston’s keeper made the initial save, but Atwood was first to the rebound and used her left foot foot to find the bottom right corner for the goal.
The visitors responded with a goal just over a minute later to make it the atmosphere a little nervy. 10 minutes later they scored again as they broke down the right side and found their left winger at the back post. Over the course of the final 15 minutes, both teams created different opportunities, but Walker’s held on to sneak away with the win.
The regular season will finish on Saturday for Walker’s with a trip to Kingswood Oxford in a Founder’s League matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 in West Hartford.
