Game Summary

Ethel Walker traveled to Cheshire on Friday afternoon to take on Class B defending champion Cheshire Academy. The game was a great example of excellent softball, with both teams playing a scoreless game through 4 innings. In the 5th inning, Walker’s got a leadoff single by Gabby Dunn ’19. She was forced out at second on a fielder’s choice which allowed Theresa Jo ’18 to reach first. Cecelia Petrarca ’19 put down a great bunt in the next spot, and a Cheshire error allowed Jo to come around and score and Petrarca to get to third. With just one out, Lizzy Strapp ’21 put down another great sacrifice bunt, allowing Petrarca to score the second run of the inning and giving Walker’s a 2-0 lead. Cheshire Academy got a run back in the bottom of the inning by using two hits sandwiched between a Walker’s error. After a scoreless 6th and a scoreless top of the 7th, Cheshire got their leadoff batter on with a walk. After a great defensive play to get a Cheshire runner trying to go from first to third, Cheshire had their 9th batter up with a runner on 3rd and 1 out. An error by Walker’s allowed Cheshire to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. After an intentional walk, Cheshire walked off with a 2 run single. Walker’s got a great performance on the mound by Hannah Theriault ’20 and at the plate by Petrarca, who reached base three times from the leadoff spot. While the loss stings, Walker’s will hope to see Cheshire again in a few weeks in the Western New England Tournament. Walker’s moves to 6-1 on the season.
