Middle School Debate Team Qualifies for Championship Tournament

Middle School debate team

Walker’s Middle School Debate Team had another successful tournament on Saturday, April 24. The motion was “This House, as the United States Federal and State governments, would require standardized testing for the 2020-2021 school year.” All three Walker’s teams competed in the Open division, which consisted of 64 teams. Our most experienced team of Charlotte Furia ’25, Nellie Kenney ’25 and Zaria St. Clair ’25 went 2-1 in the three rounds and ended up in 12th place overall. Our other eighth grade team of Mae McCall-Sorkin ’25, Val Lawson ’25, and Amber Furtado ’25 also went 2-1 and came in 19th. Walker’s seventh grade team of Carly Wilkes ’26 and Siya Singhal ’26 competed against some very experienced teams and went 1-2.

All Walker’s debaters scored in the top one third of the 192 Open speakers, with Nellie ranking highest in 19th place and Carly next in 31st place. The team of Charlotte, Nellie and Zaria qualified for the Championship tournament on May 22. They have to prepare the motion “This House, as the International Criminal Court, would make ecocide an international crime.” Again we would like to thank Siya’s father, Sumit Singhal P’26, for giving up a beautiful Saturday to volunteer as a judge for the tournament. The league cannot run without our dedicated parents!
