Students Recognized in Prestigious Smith College Poetry Prize

April 11, 2019

Walker’s juniors Emmy Vitali ’20 and Hayley Bravin ’20 were hosted by Smith College on April 9 for the 13th Annual Smith College Poetry Prize for High School Girls, a prestigious annual competition open to junior and senior girls in New England.

Out of nearly 200 submissions, the judge, esteemed poet Jenny George, selected Hayley’s poem as a semifinalist and Emmy’s poem as a finalist. The winner and finalists, including Emmy, performed a reading of their works along with Jenny George. It was a wonderful event, and Emmy read her poem, “Ode to Congenital Hypothyroidism,” with poise and power.

The event was sponsored by The Poetry Center at Smith College, which was founded in 1998 with the goals of bringing distinguished poets to the College, creating a video archive of their readings, and promoting an appreciation of poetry in the larger community through outreach to schools.
