Game Summary
On Wednesday afternoon, The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team earned a 4-0 win when they hosted Pomfret School, last season’s NEPSAC Class C champions. Wednesday’s victory pushed the Wildcats’ record to 8-2 on the season as seven different players recorded a goal or an assist on the day.
In the opening half, Pomfret successfully defended a barrage of attacking efforts for the home side as Walker’s took 11 first-half shots. It was not until the 36th minute when Ayden Riendeau ’26 opened the scoring to finish off a great passing sequence. Gisselle Peña ’26 won a tackle on the left sideline and played back to Caroline Hayes ’27. Hayes looked up and found Maddie Marsele ’29 in the midfield. Her first touch on the turn allowed her to beat a defender and Marsele played it out wide on the right to Lily Devine ’27. Devine used the space in front of her and slotted a pass to Janalyn Weber ’26 on the wing who beat her defender to the end line. Weber then looked up to find a Riendeau at the near post for a one-time finish. For Riendeau, it was her first of the season and 23rd of her career at Walker’s.
In the second half, Walker’s continued to put on the pressure and they recorded two goals in a seven-minute span to put the game out of reach with about 20 minutes remaining. 12 minutes after the opening kickoff, Maya Atwood ’26 was first to a loose ball, and her one-time long ball over the top allowed Peña to run on and score to make it 2-0. Seven minutes later Atwood and Nona Gibert Francisco ’28 combined in the middle of the field to take the ball off of a Pomfret midfielder. Gibert Francisco attacked the space and then found Weber on the right. Weber beat her defender on the dribble and caromed a shot from 20 yards off the inside of the back post to give the home team a three-goal cushion.
With just over six minutes remaining, Jazmine Restituyo ’27 scored her second goal of the season to make it 4-0. This time, Marsele played the final pass into the path of Resittuyo who took a touch toward the near post and finished up high to complete the scoring. In the net, Emma Mazur ’27 recorded her third shutout of the season as she made three saves, including a an important one in the final minute to preserve the clean sheet.
Walker’s will host Marianapolis on Saturday as part of Family Weekend. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 as Walker’s will look to win their fourth straight game of the series with Marianapolis dating back to 2022.
