Game Summary
On Wednesday afternoon, The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team traveled to Berkshire School for their third straight away game and their first contest against a Class B opponent this season. The teams combined for a goal apiece in the first half, but Walker’s scored the final goal with just under late in the second half to win 2-1.
In the first half, Jani Weber ’26 opened the scoring in the 12th minute with her third goal of the season when she finished off a wonderful passing sequence and her shot from the left found the back corner. Gisselle Peña ’26 recorded the assist on the play. Less than a minute later, Berkshire recorded a goal when they forced the ball to the top of the Wildcats’ defensive penalty box. Walker’s won the final tackle of the sequence, but it deflected over the goal line for an own goal. Defensively, it was the first goal Walker’s had given up in over 200 minutes of action since their opening game of the season.
The score remained 1-1 until just under 15 minutes remaining before the final whistle. Once again, Peña and Weber combined for the goal. On the season, it was Peña’s fourth assist in as many games and she now has 32 goals and 24 assists in 38 career games. Weber now has four goals and two assists this campaign.
In the goal, Emma Mazur ’27 recorded four saves to earn her third win of the season as Walker’s now holds a 3-1 overall record this fall. Caroline Hayes ’27, Emily Sanchez ’26, Lily Devine ’27 and Maya Atwood ’26 held down the fort in front of Mazur, and Walker’s only gave up seven shots during the contest. Walker’s will return home for their next two contests – both against fell Class B opponents. Next up is Greenwich Country Day School on Saturday. Kick-off in Simsbury is scheduled for 2:30pm.
