Game Summary
On Wednesday afternoon, Ethel Walker’s varsity soccer team traveled to Greens Farms Academy for both team’s first contest of the season. In 2023, Walker’s earned their first WWNEPSSA Class C Championship while Greens Farms capped the fall off with a NEPSAC Class C title. In the opening game last year, Walker’s earned a 5-4 win at home over Greens Farms. With all of that in mind, it was no surprise that 2024’s opening kickoff was a tight contest, and the Dragons held on for a 3-2 victory.
Walker’s opened the contest with the first chance of the game, but Greens Farms then took control of the run of play and found the back of the net in the 17th minute to take an early lead. It would stay 1-0 through halftime as Jenna Hamel ’25 recorded five saves in the opening frame for the visitors. Greens Farms doubled their lead three minutes into the second half when their center forward broke free and slotted home a breakaway inside the right post.
Less than two minutes later, Walker’s scored their first goal of the season when Allison Hayes ’25 hit a one-time volley from the top of the of the penalty box into the upper right corner. Jani Weber ’26 played the cross into the box after receiving a through ball from Gigi Peña ’26. The game remained 2-1 for 11 minutes before the Dragons played a quick short corner kick and rifled a shot into the top left corner to double their lead.
Once again, Walker’s responded just two minutes later. This time, the same three players combined up top for the goal, but it was Weber who was on the end of a delicate touch from Peña after Hayes made the initial cross. For Weber, it was her first career goal for Walker’s in her first game. The visitors finished the game creating chances, but they could not find the net, and Greens Farms held on for the win. On the day, Hamel finished with 12 saves to open her senior season.
Walker’s will once again travel for their next game when they take on Loomis Chaffee in Founder’s League action on Saturday. The kick-off is scheduled for 2:00.
