On Wednesday, April 1, representatives from Walker’s Robotics team, the Wirecats, attended the Connecticut Technology Council’s 2015 Women of Innovation Awards Dinner in Plantsville. The awards gala recognized “women accomplished in science, technology, engineering, math and those who are involved in their community” (ct.org). View list of award recipients

The Wirecats were invited by United Technologies, and had the opportunity to talk about their robot and the team with gala attendees.

Walker’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team was formed in 2014 and has competed in two competitions so far this year. Last weekend, they competed in the New England District qualifier in Hartford and were selected as the Rookie All-Star of the event. The team set a new personal best score for a round, and significantly improved on their performance from their previous event last month.

The Wirecats ended the day ranked 32 out of 40 teams in qualification points, but were given a provisional berth to attend the New England District Championships in the Rookie division. There, they will compete with other event Rookie All-Stars to earn a spot at the FRC World Championships in St. Louis, MO at the end of the month. United Technologies has pledged to pay the Wirecats’ entry fee if they qualify, but the team will need help to get their robot, students and tools to the event.Follow the action on the team’s twitter account, @wirecats5686!
