Seventh Grader Raises Awareness About the Effects of Climate Change Through Prose

January 11, 2019

Congratulations to Walker’s seventh grader Chloe Fares ’24, whose written piece “The Great White Depression” was published as a notable submission in the Middle School Prose division of the 2018 Ocean Awareness Contest by Bow Seat, a Boston-based nonprofit that works to inspire the next generation of ocean caretakers through education and engagement with the arts, science and advocacy.

Chloe addresses coral bleaching from the point of view of a royal gramma fish who has experienced warming waters and dying coral. Chloe explains, “I thought that if I put myself into a fish’s shoes – I mean fins – then I and the reader would care more about what is happening in the ocean with coral bleaching due to climate change.”
