State-of-the-Art Sustainable Residence Hall Opens on Campus

Sustainable, state-of-the-art dormitory now open on The Ethel Walker School campus

This fall, the Walker’s community gathered to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the newest feature to campus: Mountain View House, a residence hall emphasizing sustainability. Designed by the visionary team at Maryann Thompson Architects, this three-story building is Walker’s commitment to its long term vision of sustainability, innovation, and student well-being. “What makes a building alive? What makes a building vibrant?” asks lead Architect Maryann Thompson addressing an audience of students, alumnae, board members, and friends. “It is the life, the joy, the connections, the relationships that happen between its walls and in its spaces.” The new residence hall supports a “never-ending dialogue” and fostering of various relationships — that being the chance encounters of its student-residents and faculty and that of the relationship with its surrounding environment.

The exterior of the all-electric residence hall features Pika-Pika charred larch wood, a biophilic roof with succulents and other green vegetation, and solar panels that supply 50% of the building’s energy. An innovative rainwater collection system uses rain chains and buried rain hogs to capture and provide gray water. The building also includes charging stations for electric vehicles, triple-glazed windows, and overhanging eaves to enhance energy efficiency by allowing sunlight during winter and shade during summer, reducing heating and cooling needs. “This dorm is an investment in our future and a symbol of respect for the land and those who have honored it — past, present, and for many years to come,” states current student Piper T. ’26.

The interior design features a modern Japanese-inspired aesthetic providing a welcoming haven for students. Filled with cozy corners and bright, airy common spaces, it offers numerous areas to gather, enjoy the natural surroundings, and engage in activities such as music, cooking, reading, and community events. The living environment is meticulously designed to foster comfort, support, and collaboration among Walker’s students. “This is the real meaning of well-being, what we hope students discover in living here,” concludes Head of School Dr. Meera Viswanathan. The modern architecture features spacious rooms and dedicated study and music areas, enhancing opportunities for community building, learning, and relaxation. Additional amenities, including laundry facilities, outdoor paths, and seating areas, further enrich the overall student experience. This thoughtful design ensures that residents have everything they need to thrive both academically and socially.
