Varsity Field Hockey and Soccer Teams Start Season Strong

Walker's soccer player on field

This week, the varsity field hockey and soccer teams both opened their seasons with great wins. The field hockey team earned a victory at Choate on Wednesday, September 12 and the soccer team traveled to Trumbull for their win against Christian Heritage on Saturday, September 8.

In an exciting come from behind victory, Walker’s field hockey defeated Founders League opponent Choate 4-3.

Choate got on the board with 18:52 into the first half. Choate tallied on two more in the beginning of the second half, along with Walker’s first goal by Sabrina Gries ’21, her first Walker’s career goal. The Wildcats trailed 3-1 with 14 minutes remaining. Tallying the second and third goal just three minutes apart was co-captain Grace Majka ’19 and a minute later, Shay Ventresca ’20 had the game winning goal, resulting in the final score 4-3.

Days before, soccer started their season strong with a 1-0 victory also on the road. Alaina Vermilya ’20 found the back of the net after hitting home a faulty clearance that resulted from Elise Namnoum ’19’s corner kick with 20 minutes remaining in the game. The defense held strong, with goalie Reagan Kerecz ’20 in the net earning the shutout for Walker’s, including eight saves. Head Coach Todd D’Alessandro P’19 commented, “We did a solid job of holding our team shape in attack and defense.”

Both teams resume competitive play on Saturday with varsity field hockey hosting Westminster at home at 2:15 p.m. and varsity soccer at Greens Farms at 2:30 p.m.
