Varsity Spring Sports Sweep Opening Games

April 5, 2019

Walker’s varsity lacrosse team earned a 12-10 victory in their home opener on Saturday, March 30 against Cheshire Academy. The team was down 7-3 at the half but connected in the second half by adding nine goals while giving up only three second-half goals. Head Coach Dee Stephan said, “Our team was relaxed and came out with renewed energy in the second half. Abby Grimaldi’s ’20 five draw controls, goal and assist combined with senior Chloe Miller’s ’19 four goals and two assists helped in the effort. Solid defensive goal work was turned in by goalies Brianna Duba ’19 and Jordana Doshna ’20.”

Lacrosse tallied another win on Wednesday at home against Suffield Academy, resulting in a final score of 8-5. The team recorded another come-from-behind victory.

Walker’s softball hosted Williston Northampton School on Wednesday, April 3 in their season opener. Facing a talented pitcher on the mound, Walker’s collected 12 hits on the afternoon. At the plate, pitcher Hannah Theriault ’20 hit a solo home run, triple and a single. Shortstop Reagan Kerecz ’20 accounted for four hits, including two triples and two doubles, and scored four runs. Solid defense at all positions held Williston to only one run. On the mound, Theriault had four strikeouts while giving up no walks. Head Coach John Monagan said, “We faced a strong team that has a tradition of being among the best in New England. We certainly have some things to work on, but overall it was a great start.”

Tennis traveled to Miss Hall’s for their season opener and came home with the first win of the season. With only four veterans on the roster of ten, Walker’s was able to pull off a strong 5-2 road win. Head Coach Brendan O’Dwyer says, “Sabrina Gries ’21 and Daisy Zhang ’21 showed tremendous resiliency in their match. They came back from a set down with a 0-5 deficit in the third set tiebreaker to win 0-6, 6-4 and 10-8.”

Tennis hosts Marianapolis Prep for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, April 6.
