Head squash coach Laila Samy comes to Walker’s from Wesleyan University where she was a four-year member of the squash team. Originally from Cairo, Egypt, Samy was the number one player on the Wesleyan team and graduated as the #4 ranked player in the United States in college squash. Samy capped her college career by being honored with the Betty Richy Award which is given by the College Squash Association. In addition to this most prestigious award, Samy earned the Hoagland Award given by Wesleyan for the best female athlete who makes contributions to women’s athletics.
Samy has outlined her plan for the 2018-2019 season. “Playing on a team is always a privilege so I want each player to give her best in order to earn that privilege. Each player is expected to represent herself well and have good sportsmanship on and off the court,” said Samy. “Even though squash is an individual sport, the final result goes to the team so all the players have to cooperate and work hard together and push each other to reach the same goal.” Samy factors in that she was in their shoes not too long ago. “I am mostly excited to share my experience with my team and I’m very excited to set goals with them and see what we can achieve together.”
The Wildcats play on new courts in the school’s Centennial Center built just two years ago. “I am very excited about Walker’s new athletic facility,” said Samy. “That always brings excitement to students about their sport because they have access to a high quality training facility.”
