Walker’s junior varsity basketball program mixes basketball instruction with a competitive interscholastic schedule.
While many girls are interested in learning the basics of the game, this team also caters to the individuals who are close to the varsity level but may need one or two seasons of polishing up skills in a less competitive environment.
The junior varsity team works closely with the varsity team in practices and in games. The teams share practice time during the beginning of the year, and often play games following one another against the same opponents.
Walker’s basketball program is a member school of the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Basketball, which provides the rules and regulations for high school basketball teams to prepare students for parallel rules in the NCAA. Walker’s basketball is also a part of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). Walker’s is a Class C division competitor, and also competes in the prestigious Founders League. League competitors include Choate, Taft, Hotchkiss, Loomis, Westminster, Kent, Kingswood Oxford, and Miss Porter’s.
Brett Benzio has coached basketball for the past 10 years with stints in the college level at Harvard and the University of Vermont. At the NEPSAC level, Brett has coached at the New Hampton School (Class AA) and Lawrence Academy (Class B). She has reached postseason play in every season as a NEPSAC head coach. She has placed players at the collegiate level at the following schools: Miami University, University of Central Florida, Bryant, Saint Anselm’s, Goldey Beacom, Howard, Manhattan College, UNC, Wake Forest, Lafayette, and Union.
