In October, Walker’s science teacher Dr. Julia Sheldon P’20, ’23 will be traveling to the Galápagos Islands on an expedition with the National Geographic Society.
Dr. Sheldon was awarded a Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship with National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions in 2014. As part of her Fellowship, she attended a workshop at National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., traveled to Norway and Arctic Svalbard on an expedition and developed an interdisciplinary elective in Arctic Studies for Walker’s students.
National Geographic and Lindblad are working to better engage with alumni of the Fellowship program. Dr. Sheldon is one of 18 former fellows (out of more than 125 applicants) chosen to travel to the Galápagos this fall in a pilot alumni program. She plans to share her experience with her students and the wider Walker’s community, and hopes to work with the science department to develop a new elective about climate change.
The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship is a professional development opportunity made possible by a partnership between National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions. The program is named in honor of Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Chairman Emeritus of the National Geographic Society. As a gift to Gil Grosvenor for his lifetime commitment to geographic education, Sven Lindblad, CEO and founder of Lindblad Expeditions, has donated space for educators aboard Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic ships. This opportunity gives educators the opportunity to extend Grosvenor’s legacy of excellence in geographic education. 2019 is the 13th year of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship Program.
