Weekend Life

There’s no end to weekend events and activities.

Your days will be full from the time you get up until your head hits your pillow.

From sundae making in Smith Dorm to trolley rides on a cold winter’s evening, there are many activities offered on the weekend that allow students much-deserved social time after a week of classes and co-curriculars. Day and boarding students choose from a variety of events and activities, making weekends at Walker’s a fun and interactive place to be.

There’s always something to do on the weekend — dances, carnivals and socials at peer schools or with them visiting our campus, sporting events, giving back to the community with community partnerships, open mic nights or casual baking and board games in the dorms. Students also travel to local events including fairs, festivals, and area amusement parks. Our student head of weekend activities works with our assistant dean of students throughout the year to be sure there are plenty of fun events and outings happening each weekend.

It’s simple to participate. Students are notified via email and by announcement at morning meetings about the upcoming weekend activities and they simply sign up online to indicate their interest. Transportation is provided both to and from all school-sponsored events and all students are expected to use the transportation provided. All activities are chaperoned by Walker’s faculty or staff. On the rare occasion that there is a fee to participate in an activity, students are able to apply the fee to their monthly statement. Students are encouraged to suggest new activities and work with the head of weekend activities to arrange details.

Some of our students’ favorite weekend activities include:

  • School dances
  • Area drives to local shops and markets
  • Restaurant trips
  • Laser tag
  • Mini golf
  • Local festivals
  • Apple and pumpkin picking
  • Amusement parks
  • Coffeehouses in the library with nearby peer schools
  • Community Partnerships and service events
  • Mall trips
  • Movie Nights
  • Community-wide traditions, such as Holiday Ride and the Ba-Na-Na

Manny pep rally

School Traditions and Weekend Fun

Hooray Sunray! A phrase commonly used to celebrate a victory, accomplishment, or award won. Every fall it’s time for a pep rally where shouts of Hooray Sunray can be heard as everyone gathers for fun and games to celebrate the upcoming co-curricular season. Sometimes, there’s even a unicorn sighting! (Or, is that Manny, a Welsh pony gelding from our barn and one of our most beloved horses?)
