The Campus

In 1917, Ethel Walker moved her school from Lakewood, New Jersey, to this site in suburban Simsbury, Connecticut because she wanted a more expansive campus on which her students could ride, participate in athletics, and enjoy nature.  The 300-acre parcel is adjacent to another 300 acres which was purchased by the Town of Simsbury for perpetual conservation. Students have full access to all 600 acres.

Our campus features verdant green fields, lightly wooded areas, rolling hills and deep wooded areas, perched atop a knoll in the Farmington River Valley with a view of Talcott Ridge, a small mountain range. Each fall, the entire school hikes up Talcott Mountain for a spectacular view to the Litchfield Hills and Berkshires to the West.

EWS Campus Shopping, dining, cultural centers and hotel accommodations are within less than five minutes from campus, and the city of Hartford is a twenty minute drive. Boston and New York City are within ninety minutes. The Town of Simsbury is an active suburban community of about 24,000 residents, known for its quality of life, its environmental awareness, and its sense of community. Major corporations such as The Hartford and Ensign-Bickford are headquartered in the town. Walker's is very much connected to the community via its community service programs.
