Involvement: Varsity Field Hockey, Varsity Basketball, Varsity Lacrosse, Co-Head of Special Olympics Basketball, and African Drumming.
“Hi! My name is Abby Spencer. I am a junior day student from Granby, CT, and I’ve been at Walker’s since my freshman year. I am a member of varsity field hockey, varsity basketball, and varsity lacrosse. I am also a co-head of the Community Partnership Special Olympics Basketball program, where we play basketball with individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. In my free time, I love spending time with my friends and family, playing with my dogs, baking, cleaning, and playing basketball. I think being a Cicerone is important because it allows me to share my love for Walker’s and help prospective families feel welcomed and informed. When families visit, my goal is to show them how Walker’s is a supportive, empowering community where every student can grow, be challenged, truly be themselves, and feel at home.”
My favorite class is Human Anatomy and Physiology because it helps me learn about the human body, and it is helping me prepare for my future in nursing.
When I arrived at Walker’s I never pictured being a co-head of a community partnership, but now that I am — I couldn’t imagine not being one!
Everyday I look forward to learning new things and seeing my friends.
My advice to an incoming Walker’s student is to be open to new experiences and not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Walker’s is a place where you’ll be supported every step of the way, so take advantage of every opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with the amazing community around you.
I think the biggest benefit of attending school at Walker’s is being part of a close-knit, all-girls community that truly empowers and supports each student. In this environment, you’re encouraged to find your voice, take on leadership roles, and grow into a confident, independent young woman.
Since my first day at Walker’s, I’ve grown so much both academically and personally. I’ve become more confident in my abilities, more comfortable speaking up and taking on leadership roles, and I’ve learned how to challenge myself while still asking for support when I need it.
Walker’s has prepared me for the future by helping me develop confidence, independence, and a strong sense of who I am. Through rigorous academics, leadership opportunities, and a supportive all-girls community, I’ve learned how to advocate for myself, take on challenges, and lead with purpose.strong, and independent.
My favorite thing to do in my free time is hang out with my friends and family, play with my 2 dogs, bake, and play basketball.
