Involvement: Equestrian Team Captain, Writing Fellows

“I left home to come to Walker’s for my freshman year of high school and have been a Cicerone since sophomore year. I have wanted to be a Cicerone since my prospective student tour here. I think it is so important for prospective families to know how much growth can happen at Walker’s. Living in the dorms, being on any team, having the chance to join clubs and committees and be active in their spirit groups (GO SUNS!) gives students the opportunities to find family outside of home. I have not been able to find a community this strong and empowering anywhere else.”

What is your favorite class and why?

My favorite class is Photography, because of how it has stuck with me long since its completion. The teacher, Mr. Barker led us through different types of photography, learning the ins and outs of our cameras as we went. My small class had so much fun finding pictures around campus and seeing and critiquing each other’s work. I have a much deeper understanding of photography as a profession and as an art form.

What is your favorite part about being a boarder?

My favorite part about being a boarder is having a group of people to go through life at Walker’s with in its entirety. Going back to my safe place in the dorm, and seeing dorm parents and peers who care about knowing me on a deeper level, and being my family home away from home, is one of my favorite parts of Walker’s. Things as simple as walking to brunch with my friends on the weekends, working on homework in the Cluett Pit together, or watching a movie or show with someone before bed have made my time boarding here feel most like home.

What do you think is the biggest benefit of attending school at Walker’s?

For me, the two largest benefits of attending Walker’s so far have been having a fresh start and building relationships that I will have forever. Leaving home was hard at times, but the community here gives a great opportunity to start new academically as well as to begin again with interpersonal relationships. I have also had immense support from students and faculty throughout my time here that has made me love building connections with people. My friends and dorm parents have already become so important in my life.
