“Hello! My name is Mariah Cubano and I think being a Cicerone is important because I get to interact and learn about new families that are coming to Walker’s! I love showing new families the culture and Walker’s and how everyone is so lively and outgoing!”

What is your favorite class and why?

My favorite class is Algebra 2! Math has always been my favorite class since the fifth grade. It has always intrigued me because of all the ways you can use different equations to solve one problem.

What is a unique experience you’ve had at Walker’s that you didn’t think you’d be involved in when arriving at Walker’s?

Walker’s took our eighth grade class to Montreal, Canada for our class trip. We got to experience the Canadian culture, food, and way of life. We also got to connect and be closer with the eighth grade class.

What is your favorite part of your typical day at Walker’s? What do you look forward to every day?

I always look forward to the sports at the end of the day. In my opinion, sports are a way to increase your ability of skills but most importantly to gain a closer connection with your peers and coaches. Most of the time, your coaches are your teachers that you see around the building: it’s always so fun to greet them when you see them around and to have great conversations with them.

What advice would you give to an incoming Walker’s student?

I would say to enjoy their time as much as possible! I’ve been at Walker’s for five years and each year, I tell my parents how fast the year flew. Everyone at Walker’s are all very nice and supportive so, be yourself!

What do you think is the biggest benefit of attending school at Walker’s?

I think the biggest benefit of attending school at Walker’s is definitely the way teachers, peers, and staff challenge you. Since it’s an all girls school, I feel like students are encouraged to speak up, try new things, and be themselves.

How do you feel you have grown (academically, emotionally, mentally) since your first day at Walker’s?

Academically, my grades have improved because of the way teachers take the time to help and encourage me when I’m struggling. Emotionally, I have learned to handle tough situations and think more independently because of different seminars that we do at Walker’s. Mentally, this school has taught me to step out of my comfort zone and not to be afraid to speak up even if I am wrong.

How do you think Walker’s has prepared you for your future?

I think Walker’s has prepared me for my future by helping me figure out my strengths and areas that I know to I need to improve on. The different classes and activities I’ve been able to try have helped me find new interests and learn mire about myself.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

My favorite thing to do in my free time is to play basketball. My older brother plays basketball at Brown University and I would love to follow in his footsteps. I also love to hang out with my family. I am a very family oriented person so I love doing things with my family.
