Course Descriptions

Aviation, Aerospace, and Paper Airplanes!

In this summer enrichment course, students will explore the basics of flight through a STEAM lens. Students will learn about the history of aviation and the impact of women on the industry, participate in engineering challenges, and learn about some of the basics of aviation, including navigation and the physics of flight. Each day will include connections to math, science, engineering, and history. The course will culminate in a project where students get to build and test their own aviation designs.

LEGO Robotics Workshop: Unleashing Creativity with Mindstorms

The LEGO Robotics Workshop: Unleashing Creativity with Mindstorms is an exciting adventure tailored for middle schoolers who are curious about robotics and love to create. Throughout this hands-on course, students will dive into the world of robotics, learning how to build and program their own robots using colorful LEGO Mindstorms kits. Guided by their imagination and teamwork, they will tackle fun challenges and explore the magic of coding, mechanical design, and problem-solving. This workshop offers a supportive and engaging environment where students can unleash their creativity, build confidence, and discover their potential as future leaders in technology and engineering. Join us for an unforgettable journey where students can bring their ideas to life and shine as STEM innovators!

Roller Coaster Engineering

Want to design and build your own roller coaster? In this hands-on course, students will learn how to create their own four-(or more!)-foot-tall marble track roller coaster with every feature they can imagine – zigzags, loop-the-loops, funnels, merges, switchbacks, half-pipes, and more. The roller coasters will be made out of nothing more than cardstock and tape, which will give students lots of flexibility to experiment and tinker. The end goal will be to make roller coasters that successfully bring a handful of marbles through multiple pathways to the bottom of the track. Along the way, students will build skills in teamwork, troubleshooting, and the engineering design process.

Taylor Swift and Feminism

In this class, we are all about the feminist evolution of the one and only Taylor Swift through her songs, interviews, and music videos. Traveling a musical journey through her massively successful Eras tour, we will cover her full discography from Taylor Swift the album to Midnights; analyzing her lyrical content for examples of girlhood, adolescence, and themes of empowerment and persistence. We will also examine her reclamation of her name, identity, and songs through the re-recording of past albums as a deliberate feminist act. How is Taylor Swift “fearless” and how can students be, too? If you are #Swiftie through and through, and want to spend a week examining all things about your favorite singer, take Taylor Swift and Feminism!
