“Hi, I’m Izzy, and I have been at Walker’s since eighth grade and have been a day student and a boarder. I have always felt welcome and at home while at Walker’s, and I’m excited to be a Cicerone and help you find your second home as well. As a student who wasn’t able to tour the campus in person because of the pandemic, I find it so important to be a Cicerone to be able to give virtual and in-person tours of the beautiful campus. I am eager to help answer questions and share my experiences at Walker’s!”

What is your favorite class and why?

I like history class because we learn how people in the past handled different situations, such as war, disease, and political instability, making it easier to understand what is happening around the world now. I have always been interested in history and different cultures.

What is a unique experience you’ve had at Walker’s that you didn’t think you’d be involved in when arriving at Walker’s?

I definitely didn’t believe how much I would grow to love lots of the dorm parents. Some examples include going into a dorm parent’s apartment and playing with her dogs while she made my friends and me mac and cheese, talking to another dorm parent about our love for crystals, and sitting in the grass outside of a dorm parent’s apartment watching her kids do gymnastics and then teaching my friends how to do what they were doing.

What is your favorite part of your typical day at Walker’s? What do you look forward to every day?

I look forward to after study hall during the school week because of the hour of free time to hang out with friends. Some days I go to my friend’s room and we watch a show or talk about what was happening. On other days I go to the common room and see what other people were doing because every night was different. Some nights there is a movie playing, people baking, or playing games.

What is your favorite part about being a boarder?

I like the structured freedom we have. Having study hall and going to bed at certain times can be annoying, but on the weekend we can pretty much do whatever we want. There are weekend activities every weekend, and it’s super nice to get off campus and go to the grocery store. I also love that pretty much everything is open on the weekends so that you can go to the cafeteria or the gym, and I love being able to go to the dance studios on the weekends for hours.

What advice would you give to an incoming Walker’s student?

I know that changing schools is super intimidating and as someone who came to Walker’s after being in public school my entire life, it can be a huge culture shock, but change can end up being for good. It is super easy to make friends at Walker’s because of all the opportunities through clubs, sports, or even having classes together. Being the new kid is never fun, and it can be really scary, but a ton of resources are available for anyone who is having a tough time adjusting.

What do you think is the biggest benefit of attending school at Walker’s?

Many teachers are passionate about what they are teaching and care for us as their students. If you are struggling, they are open to meeting you, and if you are concerned about their class, their emails are always available. Many courses are also more free to ask questions and get involved. The teachers want you to think and use what you used in class to learn more.

How do you feel you have grown (academically, emotionally, mentally) since your first day at Walker’s?

I have grown a lot at Walker’s. I am more outgoing and have developed the ability to go up to someone and start a conversation. I feel like I am getting more comfortable with not always being right and getting answers wrong in front of my classmates. I know my ability and am no longer intimidated by taking honors classes.

How do you think Walker’s has prepared you for your future?

I feel that I am very responsible because of going to Walker’s. I think I will thrive in college based on my experience boarding, doing my laundry, getting groceries, and learning the balance between hanging out with friends and focusing on your homework and studies.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Even though I love hanging out with my friends, my favorite thing to do in my free time is to go to the dance studios. Not many people go to the studios on the weekend, so having a big open studio to myself is my favorite thing ever. I can work on whatever I want, whether it be choreography, new tricks, or my strength and flexibility. I feel like, on the weekends, I could spend hours in the studios.
